Programs: St. Mary of Magdala typically offers seasonal discussion programs for Advent and Lent, as well as periodic book discussions or retreat opportunities.
Invited Speakers :  St. Mary of Magdala sponsors special lectures advertised to the public, as well as inviting visiting homilists  or other speakers to broaden our understanding.

Lent, 2024: We delved into Midrash:  Reading the Bible with Question Marks, by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso  .We thank Rabbi Sasso for making a personal appearance!

The Trusted Mentors program

Trusted Mentors (
TrustedMentors.org) trains volunteers to be mentors for those coming out of prison, homelessness, or underemployment.  These person-to-person mentoring relationships improve lives by developing life skills and positive social networks. A mentor for ten years, Ed is Mentor Matching Coordinator for Successful Rentry.  Several members of our community have completed the training and served as mentors.

Dr. Ralph is the Director of the Master in Pastoral Studies program for Roman Catholics at the Lexington Theological Seminary and the author of fifteen books, including the best seller And God Said What? An Introduction to Literary Forms in the Bible.  Dr. Ralph's talk shared the title of her recent book, shown at the right.

2015, Rev. Dr. Jimmy Watson,  pastor of the United Church of Christ,  Indianapolis, on the historical Jesus with excerpts from his book, “Big Jesus: a Pastor’s Problems with Christology," including his understandings from the Jesus Seminar. Continued discussions were held on two following Wednesday evenings  in which we also discussed John Dominic Crossan’s book, “How to Read the Bible and Still be a Christian.”

Dr. Dorothy Irvin, ThD, University of Tübingen, Germany
"Women Leaders in the Early Church: the Archeological Documentation"

Dr. Irvin holds a pontifical doctorate in Catholic theology from the University of Tübingen, with specialization in Bible, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, and archaeology.  Her lecture was illustrated by photographs of sites depicting women's roles in early Christianity.
